Colin and Adam appeared in the plush dining room wearing the same clothes as the first night. The same people looked at them with the same disgust. Adam was even sure that the pianist was playing the same song as he had been the first nightâthough, of course, one piece of classical music sounded the same as the next one in his mind. It was a bit like Groundhog Day.
Keen to keep a clear head, they grabbed a couple of soft drinks from the bar and chose a seat near the door, figuring everyone who came or went would have to walk past them.
Over the course of the next half an hour, nearly all of the players arrived. Hazza and Vaughn arrived a few minutes apart, both in very expensive suits. A short while later, Isiah entered the room with a very drunk looking Sean on his arm. There was no sign of Tex.
Adam was unsure if he was being paranoid, but he thought that Isiah had given them a dirty look as heâd entered.
Had Sean given him a heads-up that Adam and Colin would be looking to have a word with him?
Surely not, Adam thought. If Sean was so close to Isiah, he probably wouldnât have blabbed about his get-rich-quick ideas to them earlier in the day. He watched as Isiah led Sean to the bar, and heard them squabbling as the former tried to order the latter a soft drink. After much consternation, the Irishman stumbled off clutching a pint of lager, leaving Isiah to pay the bill.
The evening passed much as the last had. Edd, the captain, gave another speech, welcoming the first-class guests, as well as those from other parts of the ship who had splashed out on a ticket to the black-tie event. Adam was surprised that he left out his âgoing overboardâ joke for the new faces in the room.
The assembled were asked to find a seat, and Adam was sure that their suspects made a point of scampering quickly to tables in the far reaches of the room-as far away from he and Colin as possible.
Small talk and introductions were made, the food came (squid ink soup for starters, duck heart with an assortment of odd vegetables for main) of which Adam once again ate absolutely nothing, grateful for the lasting fullness courtesy of Colonel Sanders. The others at the table were aghast when Adam returned his plate, practically untouched. He heard the mother and daughter, sitting opposite, muttering about how money changes people, and that there were poor folk on the street who would do disgraceful things for a morsel of that food that had been so unthoughtfully discarded.
Adam was about to answer them back, to tell them that he was as far from rich as it was possible to be, when something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention.
Isiah was weaving his way through the tables, headed for the door while typing a message on his phone.
âMake sure no one takes my dessert while Iâm away,â Adam said, pushing himself out of his seat.
